Frequently Asked Questions and Support

On this page we’ve tried to answer as many of the questions we’re most often asked as we can.

Please scroll down to the bottom of the page if you’d like to know if there are any currently known-issues with WorryTree that we’re working on behind the scenes.

If you’re interested in watching a short (25 minutes) tutorial on how to use WorryTree and how it works, then we recently recorded a webinar with our Founder Louise where she takes us through all of the main features of WorryTree. You can watch that here.

Background to WorryTree

  • WorryTree is a simple mobile app which helps you to record and manage your worries wherever you are. WorryTree asks you to record whatever you're worrying about and then takes you through a few short steps to decide whether it's a worry you can control and then creates an action plan. You can also set reminders if you need to do something later on about your worry.

  • WorryTree is designed to work alongside Cognitive Behavioural Therapy although you can also use it as a standalone worry recording app.

It is based on a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy technique known as the worry tree technique and enables you to check and challenge your worries.

  • Louise Stevenson founded WorryTree following a diagnosis of Generalised Anxiety Disorder. Louise was referred for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy but found it hard to practice the techniques she was learning on a regular basis. She looked for an app to help her and when she couldn’t find one she decided to design one for herself. She knew that if she was looking for something to help her practice, then there would be other people out there who could benefit from it too.

Getting Started with WorryTree

  • The new release of WorryTree has a login feature where you can log in with either your Apple ID, Google ID or an email address. Previous PIN logins will no longer work and the first time you open the new release you will need to set up your account using one of those methods. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll be invited to move your old worry data across to the new app.

  • When you first update WorryTree to our new version, you will be invited to move your data across. In order to do this you’ll need to tap on ‘Allow’. If you don’t do this, you won’t have the opportunity to migrate your data at a later date as the new version will write over the old version.

  • No we cannot see any of your worries. The worries that you journal into WorryTree are fully encrypted and secured and not shared with any other person at any point.

If you set up an account when you use WorryTree then this is also password protected so that other people who use your phone cannot access them. If you do share your phone with others make sure you log out of WorryTree when it’s not in use as an extra layer of security.

  • You can reset your password from the profile page within WorryTree which is the second icon on the menu at the bottom of the screen.

Tap on the ‘Profile’ icon and then tap on ‘Change Password’.

If you originally logged into WorryTree using your Google account or Apple ID then you’ll need to log back in using those details too. Password reset only works if you set up a password when you first signed into WorryTree.

  • If you forget your password you can reset it from the login page. Tap on ‘Sign In’ and then tap on ‘Forgot password?’ This will then take you through to a password reset screen where you can set a new password. Make sure you can access your email to verify your new password.

  • You can add your own worry categories from the Categories tile on the home screen and new distractions from the Distractions tile on the home screen.

Tap on the ‘Categories’ or ‘Distractions’ tile and then tap on the ‘+’ icon to set up your own customised categories and distractions.

  • We work really hard to iron out any bugs or glitches in WorryTree, but sometimes there may still be some gremlins appearing now and then.

If you're having a problem with WorryTree then please contact us via the form below as soon as possible with some details and we’ll investigate.

  • Distractions are something that can be used when a worry can’t be resolved, which is common with hypothetical (what if…?) worries. In these situations, it is more effective to mindfully refocus your attention on something other than the worry, such as meditating or going for a walk.

In the app, when you input a worry and decide no, there is nothing I can do about this, it will show a list of distractions you can choose from, or you can add your own in the distractions section of the app.

  • To find your worries, go to the home screen and tap on ‘Manage worry’. From here you can see all of the worries that you have resolved, or that remain unresolved, and you can go back in and edit them or resolve them at a later date.

Another way of looking at your worries is by going onto the home screen and tapping on ‘Categories’. This section is more effective for viewing your own customised categories, but it also enables you to see all of your worries so far sorted into each category, which can be helpful to see if there are any specific themes coming through for you.

  • We hope that you’ll feel an immediate benefit from practicing the worry tree technique – often people feel relief from writing their worries down straight away. Everyone is different, though; some people respond instantly, while for others it may take longer. If you don't feel a big difference straight away, keep going with them – the more you practice, the greater the impact.

  • The idea of WorryTree is that you can use it at any time of day and the sooner you write down your worries in the app, the sooner the worry is taken out of your head and dealt with so that you can move on. The best way to use WorryTree therefore is whenever you catch yourself worrying.

However, some people like to use WorryTree for their worry time practice, which is where you schedule half an hour every day, usually in the late afternoon or early evening, to do all your worrying then.

  • Navigate to the ‘Settings’ menu which you’ll find on the bottom right of the screen. Within Settings tap on ‘Theme’ and here you can choose dark mode, light mode or set it to change with your own system settings.

  • Yes, we support multiple devices, if you have an account, simply download the app on the device and use the same login details.

  • Our sensory practices are short audio recordings which will help you focus on a part of your body for a short period of time. Focusing in this way helps us to calm our nervous system when it is activated (for example anxiety and stress) before we try to problem solve our worries.

  • We’ve worked with coach Sally Hardie to share with you some sensory practices available as audio tracks within WorryTree. These practices guide us through focusing on our different senses. Each practice is between two and five minutes long. Most of the practices can be done with your eyes closed or open.

  • Our sensory practices work by guiding you to focus on your body rather than the thoughts in your mind. Evidence suggests that doing practices like these, also known as interception practices, helps us to regulate our emotions and improve our wellbeing. We know for sure that problem solving our worries is really hard when we are feeling stressed or anxious, and so we have introduced these practices to help you calm your body first before you try our problem solving exercises.

  • Currently you need to have a wifi or mobile data connection in order to use WorryTree. However we are working on creating an offline mode for WorryTree so that you can use it at any time and then your worries will save when you’re next on a wifi or data connection.

  • WorryTree ensures a > 99.9% service availability of our app and website. We respond to all support requests within 24 hours and all deletion requests within 48 hours.

WorryTree Plus

  • WorryTree Premium is our upgrade available via an annual or monthly subscription.

You can upgrade by tapping on any functionality tile that is on the home screen. It brings you extra features including the ability to connect WorryTree to your calendar to add actions and events, an uncertainty-challenging tool, a gratitude journey and our most popular negative thought-challenging tool.

    Google Play Subscriptions (Android): https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7018481

  • If you have purchased a Premium subscription but you are still seeing lock icons on premium content, first of all please make sure you are logged in correctly.

If you are already logged in, log out and force-quit the app, then re-open it and log back in.

If you purchased your subscription via iTunes in the app:

Tap on the ‘Upgrade’ tile on your home screen again and tap on ‘Restore Purchase’.

If you purchased your subscription via Google Play in the app:

Check that you can see the subscription listed under your subscriptions in the Google Play Store app.

Go back to the WorryTree app and tap a piece of locked content. This should automatically sync your subscription.

Known Issues with our WorryTree App

This is where we'll let you know the latest known issues, glitches or gremlins that we're working on! If you have an issue that isn't included below then please let us know via the contact form and we'll look into it as quickly as possible.

Issues on some Android devices that the Premium access does not open - updated 3 April ‘24

We are aware that following deployment of our latest app (v4.0.4), this has affected some of our Android users in accessing the worry functionalities. We are currently working hard in ensuring that this is resolved as soon as possible and appreciate your patience whilst we fix this issue. We will update this page once we have confirmation of a fix for this issue.

Issues on some devices that the Premium access can not be opened - updated 23 February ‘24

A very small number of our community have experienced an issue where their premium subscription access is no longer available. In this scenario we ask that users fully log out of the Worry-Tree app and ensure that the app has been completely closed, ensure that their device is connected to Data/Internet and then log back in. This should resolve the issue. If you are still experiencing issues, we ask that you email us hello@worry-tree.com where we will make sure that we get you back up and running.

Issues on some Android devices with being logged out every time you leave the app - updated 6 September ‘23

Some of our community have been finding that they are logged out every time they navigate away from WorryTree and have to log back in again. This is normally happening to people who are signing in using with a Google account. If that’s the case, try changing your google settings first to see if the problem resolves. Instructions for how to do that can be found at this link.

Issues on some devices with premium access disappearing after updating WorryTree - updated 6 Sept ‘23

We have recently added a new plug-in to WorryTree which will manage premium subscriptions better. Some users are finding when they update to the latest version of WorryTree, their premium content is disappearing. This should restore after a short while by itself, but you can also manually speed up the process by restoring your purchase. The instructions for how to do this on Apple devices are here and for Android here.

Issues on some devices with worry time and worry actions not adding to the device calendar - updated 15/6/23

If your worry scheduling isn’t adding into your calendar and you’d like them to, first of all make sure you have enabled ‘Calendar Reminders’ in your Settings and chosen the calendar you wish them to be added to. If they’re still not adding to your calendar, check that your calendar is syncing - instructions on how to do this can be found here for Apple users and here for Android users. If your worry time still isn’t adding to your calendar, please email us at hello@worry-tree.com with your device type and operating system details.
